Leh, Sept 08: A delegation from the Buddhist Minorities Coordination Committee (BMCC) representing the villages of Sapi, Pilung, Fokar, Shargol, Mulbekh, and Wakha met with Hon’ble Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in Leh today.

During the meeting, the delegation extended their sincere gratitude for the recent establishment of Sham as a new district within the Union Territory of Ladakh. They also expressed appreciation for the formation of four additional districts: Zanskar, Nubra, Changthang, and Drass. The delegation conveyed their deep thanks to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Home Minister Amit Shah, and Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra for addressing the long-standing demand for new districts in Ladakh.

Special acknowledgment was given to the creation of Sham district, which the delegation believes will significantly benefit local communities. They highlighted past grievances concerning the delimitation of the two existing districts by the erstwhile Jammu & Kashmir government, which they argued was done without adequate consultation and consideration of geographical and administrative challenges. This, they noted, led to isolation and socio-economic hardships for the region.

The delegation requested that their villages be incorporated into the newly established Sham district and sought the upgrade of Tehsil Shargole to Sub Division status within the district. They believe these changes are crucial for ensuring fair political representation and improving socio-economic conditions. By integrating these areas within Sham, they anticipate enhanced administrative efficiency and accessibility.

Additionally, the delegation acknowledged the Hill Council Leh’s efforts in providing balanced support to all regions and its focus on minority groups.

In response, Hon’ble Chairman/CEC Tashi Gyalson assured the delegation that their concerns would be presented to the relevant authorities and included in upcoming committee discussions. He promised full support in addressing their requests.

The delegation expressed their confidence in the Government of India and their hope for a fair resolution to their requests.
