Leh, Sept 07: Inspector Tsewang Namgial of the Ladakh Union Territory Disaster Response Force (UTDRF) made the ultimate sacrifice on Saturday, giving his life in the line of duty.

The news of Inspector Namgial’s martyrdom has cast a wave of sorrow across Ladakh. He was leading a search operation in the Indus River in Khaltsi when their search boat capsized. The swift current left them with no chance to stabilize, resulting in the inspector’s tragic death. Three others were injured in the incident.

The search operation was underway to locate the body of a 16-year-old girl who had drowned in the Indus River on Thursday. The UTDRF team had been working diligently to recover her body.

Inspector Namgial was known for his unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, often putting his life at risk to save others. In the past three months alone, he successfully led at least five search operations in the Indus River.

His mortal remains were brought to the district police lines, where he was honored by Ladakh police, the Hill Council’s Chief Executive Councilor, and residents of Leh, who paid their final respects to the fallen hero.

A friend and colleague described him as “a true hero whose passion for his work and compassion for people defined him.” Another colleague remarked, “He embodied the spirit of service and sacrifice. Ladakh has lost a great son.”
