Leh, Sept 06: Haneefa Jan, the Member of Parliament from Ladakh, has thrown his full support behind Sonam Wangchuk’s Delhi Chalo Padyatra, a significant climate cum political march that began on September 1, 2024, from Leh. The ambitious journey spans approximately 950 kilometers, with Wangchuk leading a diverse group of volunteers committed to raising awareness about Ladakh’s urgent issues.
In a statement released Friday, MP Haneefa Jan expressed his unwavering support for the padyatra, underscoring its critical importance for the region’s future. “I wholeheartedly support and welcome the Pad Yatra to Delhi, led by Sonam Wangchuk and participated by volunteers from all backgrounds in this extreme walk,” Jan said. “This movement is of utmost importance for the future of Ladakh.”
Jan highlighted his ongoing commitment to the people of Ladakh, particularly emphasizing his alignment with the four-point agenda advocated by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Apex Body of Leh. These goals, he asserted, are not mere political demands but are vital for ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for Ladakh.
The MP’s statement also included a call to action for the Indian government. “I respectfully urge the Honorable Home Minister of India, Shri Amit Shah ji, to take the necessary steps to facilitate the resumption of dialogues and discussions between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the high-power committee of Ladakh,” Jan urged. “These talks are crucial to addressing the legitimate concerns and aspirations of the people of Ladakh.”
Despite his support, Jan revealed that his current commitments abroad prevent him from participating in the padyatra at this time. He assured that he plans to join the movement actively upon his return to India.
Sonam Wangchuk’s Delhi Chalo Padyatra has garnered widespread attention and support, with many viewing it as a crucial step towards addressing environmental and political issues faced by Ladakh. The journey, which is expected to culminate in Delhi, aims to draw national attention to the unique challenges and aspirations of the region.
With Assembly elections in major states already announced, the padyatra is likely to affect the political dynamics for the BJP as eyes of the nation are likely to remain fixed on the growing momentum of this movement and the responses it elicits from policymakers in the capital.
