Leh, Sept 05: Asserting that the Motor Vehicle Department was taking various initiatives to improve the transport system in Ladakh, Secretary Transport Department, Amit Sharma has assured his full support in mitigation of the issues being faced by various Unions of Commercial Vehicles.
Sharma also sought the support of Union leaders for safer roads for passengers as well as pedestrians in the region.
He said this while interacting with the Presidents, Office Bearers and representatives of all the Unions of Commercial vehicles of Leh District, on the sidelines of a Road Safety Awareness Programme held the previous day at Eco Park, Leh.
This Road Safety Awareness Programme was organised by Traffic Police Ladakh under the ‘I Drive Safe’ campaign, in its endeavour to reach out to the major stakeholders i.e. the drivers of Commercial Vehicles.
Besides Amit Sharma, the event was also graced DIG Leh -Kargil Range Sheikh Junaid Mehmood, SSP Leh Shruti Arora, ADC Leh Ghulam Mohd, SP Security Deepak Digra, Additional SP Leh Regzin Sangdup, ARTO Leh Inzar Rana, and representatives of all the Unions of Commercial vehicles of Leh District.
At the event, the Union Office bearers were facilitated with traditional Khataks by the Transport Secretary and the DIG LKR who also interacted with the participants during the open discussion and interaction session .
Earlier, SP Traffic Ladakh, Kacho Ishtyaq A A Khan briefed the gathering regarding the motive and status of this Road Safety Awareness Campaign which was launched on the directions of the Lieutenant Governor Brigadier BD Mishra and the Ladakh Police Chief Dr SD Singh Jamwal.
He reiterated that this constant interaction and meetings will go a long way to make the drivers of the commercial vehicles accountable and responsible for their own safety and the safety of the passengers.
ARTO Leh Inzar Rana spoke to the participants regarding Road Safety and role of Motor Vehicle Department in minimizing Road accidents.
DIG Leh Kargil Range, Sheikh Junaid Mehmood gave a detailed data on the number of motor vehicle accidents of the preceding years in Ladakh and sought for cooperation from the Transport Union members to lessen this graph in the coming time.
He also instructed SP Traffic Ladakh to do the impact study of this Campaign to see the effectiveness and impact in mitigating Road Traffic Accidents.
A demo on First Aid ,CPR and other pivotal response to save precious lives and evacuation by the drivers themselves, immediately after any road accident was also presented by the team of UTDRF Leh.
Later, ‘I Drive Safe’ sticker campaign was launched by the officers and the Union heads which were also affixed on the vehicles .
Deputy SP Traffic Leh, Sonam Dorjey welcomed the guests and DTI Leh Inspector Parvez Ahmed managed the stage.
SP Traffic Ladakh thanked all the guests and the participants for their cooperation to make this inaugural event of the Campaign at Leh a successful one and ensured that this campaign shall be carried forward to all the major corners of Leh District.
