Kargil, Sept 02: In a notable initiative towards promoting eco-friendly construction practices, students from the Government Model Degree College Zanskar participated in a workshop focused on sustainable building practices, organized by Pema Care in collaboration with the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL).
The workshop, held in Kargil, gathered a diverse group of esteemed architects and engineers, offering students a unique opportunity to gain practical knowledge on constructing sustainable structures using locally sourced materials. This educational event was designed to blend theoretical insights with hands-on training, addressing the urgent need for environmentally responsible building methods.
Attendees were introduced to key concepts in sustainable construction, including soil chemistry and the transformative process of making durable bricks from raw earth. This aspect of the workshop underscored the importance of utilizing local resources to mitigate environmental impact and preserve regional heritage.
Practical sessions provided participants with direct experience in brick-making, combining traditional techniques with modern sustainable practices. Students learned to integrate these methods into their future projects, enhancing their understanding of both local and innovative building practices.
Acho Dorje, an expert from HIAL, highlighted the significance of the workshop: “Learning to construct with what’s around us not only preserves our environment but also our culture.” His sentiment was echoed by Yashwant Negi from HIAL, who emphasized the workshop’s role in shaping the future of sustainable living in the Himalayas: “These students are the future of sustainable living in the Himalayas, and today they have taken their first step.”
The collaborative effort between Pema Care and HIAL aims to embed sustainability into educational frameworks, equipping students with practical skills that are immediately applicable in their communities. The enthusiasm displayed by the participants reflects a strong commitment to adopting and advancing sustainable building practices.
This workshop underscores a growing recognition of the need for eco-conscious construction methods, particularly in sensitive ecological areas such as Zanskar. By empowering the next generation of architects, engineers, and builders with sustainable techniques, the event is a significant step towards a greener future.
