Leh, Sept 02: The Climate Cup 2024 kicked off with a spectacular opening day, blending the excitement of football with a powerful message about climate change, the previous day.
Organized by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh in collaboration with the Ladakh Football Association, the tournament is dedicated to uniting communities worldwide in the fight against climate change while celebrating the sport of football.
The opening ceremony was honored by Kyabje Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche as the Chief Guest, whose presence added spiritual and cultural significance to the event. Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson, LAHDC Leh, attended as the Guest of Honor. Executive Councillor for Culture Stanzin Chosphel; Secretary of Youth Services and Sports Vikram Singh Malik, Secretary RDD Amit Sharma, DIG Ladakh Police, Sheikh Junaid Mehmood; Former Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Former CEC Rigzen Spalbar, Former CEC Gyal P Wangyal, Former EC and President BJP Ladakh Phunchok Stanzin and several other senior officials and dignitaries were also present.
The day’s matches delivered thrilling football action. In the first match, Gokulam Kerala FC demonstrated their exceptional skill and teamwork, overpowering Skalzangling FC with a commanding 8-1 victory. This performance set a high bar for the rest of the tournament. The second match saw NorthEast United FC narrowly defeat 1 Ladakh FC with a 2-1 score, showcasing a closely contested and exciting game.
The enthusiastic crowd created a vibrant atmosphere in the stadium, reflecting the deep passion for football in the region. At the end of the matches, the dignitaries presented the Man of the Match awards, celebrating the players’ outstanding performances and their role as ambassadors for the Climate Cup’s core message of environmental sustainability.
