LG Mishra visits GDC Drass, inaugurates Hostel Block, Pickle Making Skill Centre, releases annual magazine

Kargil 29 :-  Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor UT Ladakh, Brig. (Dr.) B.D Mishra (Retd.) and First Lady Smt. Neelam Mishra on Wednesday visited Govt. Degree College Drass where he inaugurated Hostel Block (Interim College) Residential Zone and Pickle Making Skill Centre.

On the occasion of inaugural ceremony, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor expressed happiness over the participation of girl students in large number than boys. He said the participation of girl students is necessary for the progress of society.

The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor applauded the reforms in education sector. HLG said education is an important tool for the upliftment of the society. HLG said education should be student-oriented adding that teaching and learning be done with care.

The HLG advised teachers to work for personality development of students and courses need to be job oriented adding dedication and discipline is essential for both teacher and student.

The HLG congratulated people of Drass on getting district status as has been announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India. The HLG also thanked the Hon’ble Prime Minster of India, Shri Narendra Modi and Hon’ble Home Minister of India, Shri Amit Shah, for the historic decision of creation of five new districts in UT Ladakh.

The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor also unveiled ‘Himbabs’, the annual magazine of GDC Drass in presence of the First Lady; CEC Kargil; DC Kargil and other officers.

The HLG distributed appreciation certificates to the meritorious students of the college. The HLG also gave Course Certificates to the students of Pickle Making and High-Altitude Trekking Skill Centres.

The others who were present at the event included Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhoon; Commissioner/Secretary Higher Education, Smt. Padma Angmo; Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil, Shrikant Balasaheb Suse; Senior Superintendent of Police, Kargil, Shree Raam R; Councilor Ranbirpora, Abdul Samad; Councilor Bimbhat, Abdul Wahid; Principal, GDC Drass, Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, faculty members and students of GDC Drass.

Earlier, Principal GDC Drass received the HLG and other guests with a warm welcome. It was followed by ceremonial plantation under ‘Ek Peda Maa Ke Naam’ by HLG, First Lady and CEC Kargil. Students of Department of Botany showcased mushroom cultivated by them and the specimens of local flora collected by the students from Drass.

The HLG along with other guests visited the Pickle Making Skill Centre. They inspected and interacted with the students and Instructor of Pickle Making Skill Centre.

During the inaugural ceremony, the Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education, Smt. Padma Angmo presented the formal welcome address. She welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries on behalf of the entire higher education fraternity. She highlighted the initiatives taken by the Higher Education Department Ladakh for the overall development of infrastructure and upliftment of academic ventures across the colleges of UT Ladakh. She stressed on the importance of innovation in Skill Centres established in various colleges.

At the event, CEC Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon congratulated the College Principal, faculty and students for the newly inaugurated hostel building. He said the higher education is one of the agents of social change and stakeholders of education play a vital role in the progress and development. The CEC also congratulated people of Drass for getting district status, a historic decision taken by the Government of India.

Students of GDC Drass presented a welcome song and a Shina dance performance on the occasion. In his concluding remarks, Principal GDC Drass, Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi thanked Hon’ble LG, First Lady, CEC Kargil, DC Kargil and other officers and officials from various departments for their presence at the event and for making it successful.
