Leh, Aug 27: The Ladakh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday organised a ‘thanks giving programme’ at its headquarters here to express its gratitude to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government for creation of five new districts in Ladakh.
In a major move aimed at decentralization of administrative functioning and reshaping the political landscape of Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday announced the creation of five new districts in the union territory. The new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—will join the existing districts of Leh and Kargil, bringing the total to seven. This decision is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of administrative processes and ensure that government schemes reach every corner of Ladakh, a region known for its expansive and difficult terrain.
On Tuesday, the Ladakh UT unit of BJP, led by its President Phunchok Stanzin and Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh Adv Tashi Gyalson, gathered at the party headquarters for a ‘thanks giving programme’.
The event was joined by Executive Councillors, Councillors, District Presidents from Leh, Nubra, Zanskar, Kargil, and BJP Chief Patrons from Drass, Changthang, and Sham.
During the event, CEC Advocate Tashi Gyalson emphasized the historical significance of Ladakh’s district establishment and called for strengthening district functions through collective efforts.
The Party President Phunchok Stanzin highlighted the BJP government’s commitment, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP National President JP Nadda to Ladakh’s development, noting the seriousness with which Modi Sarkar considers Ladakh’s concerns.
District Presidents also expressed deep gratitude to the party leadership, CEC Gyalson, and former MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal for their dedication and efforts.
In a post on X, Shah said on Monday that the Union Home Ministry has decided to create the five new districts in pursuit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh.
“The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorstep by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny,” he said.
The home minister said the Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh.
Prime Minister Modi hailed the creation of the new districts as a step towards better governance and prosperity.
Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to people, he said, congratulating them.
He said on X, “Creation of five new districts in Ladakh is a step towards better governance and prosperity.”
However, the Leh Apex Body, which along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) is fighting for their four major demands including granting of statehood and extension of sixth schedule of the Constitution, said they will continue their peaceful struggle.
Ladakh was carved out of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and declared a UT after the state was divided into two UTs on August 5, 2019. On that day five years ago, Article 370, which gave special status to the erstwhile state, was also abrogated. Being a UT, Ladakh comes under the direct administrative control of the union home ministry.
