Zanskar, Aug 26: Stanzin Lakpa, the Cha Councillor, has expressed his profound gratitude to the government for fulfilling the long-standing demand of granting district status to Zanskar. In a statement to the media, Lakpa extended heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and all the Cabinet Ministers involved, acknowledging their critical role in realizing this significant milestone for the region.

Lakpa also expressed his appreciation for the senior leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including National President J.P. Nadda, National General Secretary B.L. Santosh, Incharge of Ladakh Affairs Tarun Chugh, and General Secretary Ashok Kaul, for their consistent support for Ladakh and its demand for the creation of new districts.

He specifically thanked the BJP leaders from Ladakh, particularly BJP President Phunchok Stanzin, Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Leh Adv Tashi Gyalson, and former Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, for their unwavering commitment to raising the demand for district status to Zanskar, which have now been fulfilled by the Modi government. Lakpa highlighted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally announced this decision through a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), marking a momentous occasion for the region.

“On behalf of the entire population of Ladakh, especially the people from Zanskar and other newly created districts, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the central leadership and the entire unit of BJP Ladakh for fulfilling this long-standing demand,” Lakpa stated.

He also recalled the meeting held on July 28 in Delhi with the Union leadership, where the demand for district status for Zanskar was raised. Lakpa expressed his satisfaction that within a month of that meeting, the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has honored their request, describing it as a “gift” for the people of Ladakh, particularly those in Zanskar who have long faced neglect and second-class treatment by previous governments in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Lakpa praised Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership, stating that it has brought an end to the decades-long injustice faced by the people of Zanskar. “We are overwhelmed with this announcement and express immense gratitude to everyone who has supported our cause,” he added.

When asked about the creation of Development Councils in the newly created districts, Lakpa expressed confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, asserting that any decision taken by the government will be acceptable to them. He also reiterated that the BJP unit in Ladakh supports constitutional safeguards for Ladakhis but does not endorse the demand for statehood, viewing it as more of a political aspiration than a developmental necessity for the region and its people.
