Leh, Aug 25: The Department of Social Work at EJM College in Leh celebrated the 5th National Social Work Week with a weeklong series of events dedicated to exploring the theme “School Social Work: Opportunities and Challenges,” reflecting the focus highlighted in the New Education Policy 2020. The event, which took place from August 15 to August 21, was initiated by the National Association of Professional Social Workers of India (NAPSWI).
The week began with a national webinar hosted by NAPSWI, which brought together state coordinators from across the country to discuss advancements and initiatives in social work. The discussions set the tone for the week’s activities, focusing on the evolving role of social workers within educational settings.
A highlight of the program was a series of thought-provoking webinars featuring prominent social work educators. Prof. Sanjai Bhatt and Prof. Asutosh Pradhan provided valuable insights into the field work practicum in school settings and the critical role of social work education in enhancing school environments.
The event also featured an Inter-Department Quiz Competition, which saw enthusiastic participation from five college departments: Zoology, Social Work, Sociology, Biochemistry, and Commerce. The competition covered a wide range of topics including economics, politics, social issues, science, and sports. The Department of Zoology emerged victorious in this engaging and educational contest.
Another key event was a workshop on “Gender-based Violence in the Context of School Setting.” The workshop was led by Aamir Sohail from the Special Cell for Women in Leh, Hasseena Batool from the Special Cell for Women in Kargil, and Shahida Parveen, Centre Administrator at the One Stop Centre in Leh. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about gender-based violence, emphasizing its various forms such as financial, physical, psychological, and sexual abuse. The experts also outlined the support systems available for victims and encouraged students to advocate for change within their communities.
A panel discussion on the theme “School Social Work: Opportunities and Challenges” rounded out the week’s activities. The panel featured Dechen Wangmo, Principal of Siddhartha High School; Prakash Chandra, Addict Counsel Level 3 from Teen Challenge (NGO); Monalisa Sharma, Principal of Mahabodhi School; and Hasseena Batool, Social Worker. The discussion provided a comprehensive look at the evolving role of social workers in schools, highlighting their impact on inclusive education, mediation between various stakeholders, and fostering values among students.
The week concluded with the National Social Work Day, celebrated with a valedictory ceremony and cultural program. The ceremony honored the speakers, workshop leaders, and the winners of the Inter-Department Quiz Competition. The event was attended by the Principal of EJM College, faculty members, and students from various departments, making it a fitting end to a week dedicated to advancing the field of social work.
