Leh, Aug 22: M.Sc students from the Department of Geology at the University of Ladakh (UoL) recently participated in a significant fieldwork opportunity around Khardung La and Karu, in collaboration with officials from the Geological Survey of India (GSI). This hands-on experience was a pivotal component of a ten-day training program focused on “Collision Tectonics and Subduction-Related Magmatism along the ITSZ Ladakh.”

The training program aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the complex geological processes that shape the region. The fieldwork provided practical insights into the collision tectonics and subduction phenomena that are central to the geological framework of Ladakh. The students had the chance to engage directly with the landscape, examining rock formations and geological structures that are key to studying the area’s tectonic history.

During the field excursion, the students were guided by experienced GSI officers who shared their expertise and provided valuable context for the geological features observed. The program also included lectures and discussions, which enriched the students’ theoretical knowledge and complemented their field observations.

“This fieldwork was an incredible opportunity for our students,” said Head of the Department of Geology at UoL. “It allowed them to apply their classroom learning in a real-world context, enhancing their understanding of the region’s unique geological setting.”
