ICAR-CAZRI concludes training programs on ‘Vegetable Cultivation’ in Zanskar

Leh, Aug 22: ICAR-CAZRI, Regional Research Station Leh, UT Ladakh conducted training programmes in the adopted TSP villages of Gyapak, Khasar and Muney at Zanskar region on Technological Intervention for vegetables cultivation under protected cultivation from 21st to 22nd  of July.

Dr. Maheshwar Singh, Head CAZRI-RRS Leh and Rigzin Dorje (Sr. Tech.) toured the above mentioned villages and organised the trainings aimed to benefits the farmers in  producing vegetables at large scale and to further lengthen the cultivation period in winter seasons  under protected structure when the whole region of Zanskar remain cut off from the mainland.

On July 21, Dr M.S. Kanwar and Rigzin Dorje visited Agriculture field, Kitchen Garden and protected structures like green house and low tunnel at Gyapak village to check out the performance of seeds inputs, which were provided by the CAZRI RRS Leh during the onset of cropping seasons. In the evening, team educated the farmers on cultivation of healthy vegetables and maintaining standard of spacing and seed rates in vegetables.

The interactive nature of the program allowed farmers to ask questions and share feedback. More than 20 farmers participated in the training program. One large green house polythene of size measuring (60 x 20 ft) of 150 GSM was provided to the Women Self-Help Group of Gyapak village.

On July 22, at Khasar village, Dr Maheshwar Singh imparted training on raising of vegetables crops under protected structure during winter season when the availability of vegetables in the market is nil. The team also demonstrated the farmers about the recipies which can be prepared from summer squash and the nutritious value of summer squash. Nearly, 20 farmers gathered in the middle of fields of the Khasar village and all the participants took keen interest in training program.

In the evening, at Muney village, Dr Maheshwar Singh and Rigzin Dorje visited the kitchen garden and green house of farmers to assess the performance of the inputs distributed the farmers during onset of cropping season. The team advised the farmers regarding preparation of fields before cultivation and to adopt proper spacing and seed rate in vegetables so as to get proper yield.

Nearly 25 farmers gathered at community hall of village and had a training program in which farmers of the village took keen interest and also made queries regarding scientific way of raising vegetables crop under protected structure so as to get vegetables crops during winter season. Pertinently, CAZRI Leh has been implementing TSP scheme to improve the livelihood of the tribal farmers of the Ladakh region.
