Nobra, Aug 21:
Govt. Degree College Nobra marked a significant milestone in student participation with the successful conduct of the Student Council Elections for the academic session 2024-25. The elections, which took place on 21st August 2024, saw a high voter turnout and enthusiastic involvement from the student body.
The elections were held for the key positions of President, Vice President, and General Secretary/Treasurer. Throughout the week leading up to the elections, candidates actively campaigned, culminating in a lively 2-hour Presidential debate, which engaged and informed the student electorate.
Voting commenced at 11:00 AM and concluded at 12:30 PM, with a remarkable voter turnout of 76.4%. Sanju Kumari, a 3rd-semester student, was elected as the President of the Student Council, while Shah Jhan, also from Semester 3, and Samina Anjum, from Semester 1, were elected unopposed as Vice President and General Secretary/Treasurer, respectively.
The election was overseen by the College IQAC Committee, which also organized a felicitation ceremony for the newly elected council members. Dr. Tsewang Motup, the college Principal, congratulated the new student leaders during the ceremony and emphasized the importance of student empowerment through the establishment of a student council. He urged the newly elected members to fulfill their duties with dedication and sincerity.
The ceremony began with a welcome address by the Convener of IQAC, Sonam Angmo, an Assistant Professor of English, who provided a detailed report on the election proceedings. The election was supported by college faculty members who served as election officials: Assistant Professor Tsewang Lahmo acted as the Returning Officer, Assistant Professor Mohd Mussa served as Sector Magistrate, Assistant Professor Rinchen Angmo was the Presiding Officer, and Assistant Professors Padma Lhamo and Spalzes Angmo served as Polling Officers.
In addition to the election, the event also served as a valuable educational platform, helping young voters understand the broader electoral system of the country.
