Leh, Aug 20: In a significant move aimed at supporting the elderly population of Ladakh, the Union Territory’s Social and Tribal Welfare Department has officially launched the Ladakh Senior Citizen Card. This initiative provides formal identification for residents aged 60 and above, enabling them to access a wide range of benefits under various government schemes. The introduction of the card marks a crucial step toward ensuring the welfare and support of senior citizens in the region.
The Ladakh Senior Citizen Card is available to all eligible residents as part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life for the region’s elderly population. The card serves as proof of identity and status, streamlining access to benefits offered through both central government and Union Territory-administered schemes.
According to an official notification, individuals aged 60 or older who possess a Ladakh Resident Certificate are eligible to apply. Applications can be submitted online through the Social & Tribal Welfare website or the e-Seva portal. Physical applications are also available at the offices of the Tehsil Social Welfare Officer (TSWO) or District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO).
Applicants are required to submit key documents, including age proof, residence proof (Ladakh Resident Certificate), address proof (Aadhar card, PAN Card, or Ration Card), and photographs. The DSWO will review and process applications, with the cards being issued on a monthly basis. Applicants can collect their cards from the DSWO office or designated camps in blocks and villages, and a digital copy will also be available for download from the portal.
The Ladakh Senior Citizen Card offers various benefits aimed at improving the welfare of senior citizens. These include access to the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) and the Integrated Social Security Scheme (ISSS) for economically weaker sections. Additionally, cardholders will have access to services at government and private old age homes, physical aids and assistive devices for BPL-category senior citizens, discounts on Indian Railways and airline fares, priority services in government hospitals, and specialized health insurance policies. Financial benefits such as higher interest rates on fixed deposits, access to senior citizen savings schemes, and reverse mortgage loans are also part of the package.
To ensure widespread awareness of the program, the department plans to launch a comprehensive publicity campaign across various media platforms, including radio, television, and social media. Special camps and help desks will be set up to assist eligible citizens with the registration process and document submission.
The Director of Social and Tribal Welfare will closely monitor the program’s implementation and effectiveness, with periodic reviews to ensure it meets its objectives and continues to provide valuable support to Ladakh’s senior citizens.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in Ladakh’s commitment to the well-being of its elderly population, ensuring they receive the recognition, respect, and support they deserve.
