Leh, Aug 02: The long-awaited dream of the people of Nubra Valley and Leh is finally becoming a reality with the commencement of work on the multi-purpose tunnel at Khardungla. This tunnel, envisioned to significantly ease travel and bolster defense capabilities, is now on the brink of realization. The initiation of soil testing for the much-anticipated Khardungla Tunnel marks a significant milestone in this long-standing aspiration.
The proposed 5.5-kilometer Khardung-La Tunnel promises to cut about an hour from the journey between Leh and Nubra, facilitating faster, safer, and smoother travel within the region. This development is expected to significantly boost Ladakh’s economic growth, enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism.
“The soil testing underway at Khardungla is a historic step towards transforming the travel experience for residents and tourists alike,” stated a local official. “This project has garnered unanimous support from all political parties and public representatives of Nubra Valley and Leh.”
In addition to improving travel, the tunnel is set to play a crucial role in supporting defense operations at the Siachen Glacier and the Turtuk Sector. The enhanced connectivity will ensure timely and efficient movement of defense personnel and equipment, reinforcing national security in the strategically important region.
Beyond its transportation and defense benefits, the Khardung-La Tunnel will serve multiple purposes that contribute to the region’s sustainable development. The tunnel will enable the installation of power and telecommunications cables, enhancing infrastructure and connectivity. It will also channel water from the northern side of Khardungla Pass to Leh, addressing the water needs of Leh Phoodo villages and Leh town.
Furthermore, the tunnel is expected to mitigate the impact of vehicle heat on the Khardung glacier, a vital water source for Leh town. By reducing vehicular traffic in the area, the tunnel will help preserve the glacier and prevent its recession, securing a critical water supply for the region.
Senior BJP Leader and former Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, shared on social media, “This project is not just about building a tunnel; it’s about ensuring the sustainable development of our region and preserving our natural resources for future generations.”
