Leh, July 08: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) has flagged off Indian Army’s Delta 5 Motorcycle Expedition from Hall of Fame War Memorial, Leh to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War.
This rally was organised to honor the valour and sacrifice of the Kargil War heroes, Veer Naris and veterans.
GOC 14 Corps, Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla along with other Army personnel, Veer Naris, ex-servicemen, NCC cadets and school students were present on the occasion on Sunday.
Emphasising the crucial role of the Indian Army in handling crisis situations, the LG highlighted the supreme sacrifices of martyrs, their courage and their achievements and stated that the nation remembers and honours their sacrifices every year on Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The LG stressed the importance of maintaining a youthful Army and mentioned the Agniveer Scheme introduced by the Government of India.
He stated that Agniveers, who have joined the Army, are performing well and emphasised that enrolment of youth in the Indian Army strengthens its ability to defeat any enemy forces.
The LG felicitated the Veer Naris and also interacted with the jawans participating in the motorcycle rally.
In a poignant tribute to the valour and sacrifice of heroes who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War, the Indian Army has embarked on a pan India D-5 Motorcycle Expedition to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Indian victory over Pakistan in the Kargil war of 1999.
The expedition was flagged off from the National War Memorial in Delhi on June 26 for the final phase of the journey culminating at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass. From Delhi, the expedition was divided into two separate routes: one team traversed the challenging Zojila Pass, while the other team took on the formidable Rohtang Pass.
On Monday, the Army on Monday flagged off the final phase of the D-5 motorcycle expedition from Srinagar, where it had reached on Saturday.
The pan India expedition has covered 10,000 km on five different routes commencing from Dhanushkodi, Dwarka, Dinjan, Delhi and converging at Drass, a defence spokesperson said.
He said the rally aims to pay homage to the Indian Army’s bravehearts who brought victory in the Kargil war. “Riding with a sense of purpose, the motorcycle rally will move through challenging terrain, echoing the spirit and determination displayed by the Indian Army on the battlefield,” he added.
The expedition is organised by the Artillery Directorate. The Regiment of Artillery played a pivotal role during the Kargil War by providing accurate and effective firepower.
