Leh, July 04: Two short films, “Echoes of Redemption” and “Trapped,” were screened, vividly portraying the harsh realities of addiction and its detrimental effects on individuals, families, and society as the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in collaboration with the Education Department, Health Department, and Ladakh Police organized an awareness programme on drug and substance abuse at St. Peter’s High School, Chuchot Yokma, Leh.

The initiative is part of the Union Territory of Ladakh’s continuous campaign to address the critical problem of drug addiction, with similar events being held at various educational institutions throughout the Leh district.

The event saw active participation from key figures including Dr. Padma Angmo, Psychiatrist and Drug De-Addiction Specialist from SNM Hospital, Leh, Rev Father Biju Mathew, Principal of St. Peter’s High School, Vice-Principal Sister Marina, and representatives from DIPR Leh. Teachers, staff, and students from classes 6 to 10 were also in attendance.

Two short films, “Echoes of Redemption” and “Trapped,” were screened, vividly portraying the harsh realities of addiction and its detrimental effects on individuals, families, and society.

Dr. Padma Angmo emphasized the severe impact of drug addiction on both physical and mental health. She highlighted the correlation between addiction and negative outcomes such as school dropouts, unemployment, and involvement in organized crime. Dr. Angmo cautioned students about the tactics of drug peddlers and stressed the importance of making informed decisions to avoid life-altering consequences.

AE&CO Stanzin Wangmo noted that District Leh was recently recognized as one of the best-performing districts nationally for its efforts in the Joint Action Plan on preventing drug and substance abuse among children. Wangmo urged students to resist peer pressure and stay away from drugs.

The programme concluded with an interactive session where students had the opportunity to ask Dr. Padma Angmo questions about their studies, mental health, and other personal concerns, providing a platform for open dialogue and support.

This awareness initiative underscores the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace and fostering a healthier, drug-free community.
