Leh, July 01: Asserting that Leh hill council was committed to diversify Ladakh’s tourism offerings, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson on Monday said the council was making all-out efforts to develop the rural tourism sector of the union territory.
Gyalson was speaking at the Sand Dune Festival held in Nubra Valley. His deputy in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh, Tsering Angchuk, along Councillor Tegar Rigzin Lundup; Councillor Panamic Tsering Sangdup; SDM Nubra, Heads of Departments; Samstan Otsal Tsogspa, Sumur; Army officials and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
The festival which witnessed a mammoth of gathering is a vibrant tribute to Ladakh’s cultural diversity, highlighting the commitment to preserving its rich heritage.
A pivotal moment for Ladakh’s tourism landscape unfolded with the inauguration of a new camel shed with 9 camels in Sumur, symbolizing the region’s dedication to enhancing tourism opportunities in lesser-explored areas.
Nestled amid the Sumur sand dunes, the camel shed aims to facilitate camel safaris, offering visitors a unique way to immerse themselves in Ladakh’s natural beauty. Generously supported by financial assistance from the council, this initiative promises to attract tourists seeking enriching experiences in offbeat destinations. The event featured captivating cultural performances by various artist groups.
In his address, CEC Tashi Gyalson highlighted the significance of promoting tourism in the Siachen belt region, emphasizing its cultural and natural treasures.

“Sumur’s sand dunes hold immense potential and we are determined to unlock this potential by offering unforgettable experiences like camel safaris,” he said.
Gyalson mentioned that last year, the tourist who reached the Siachen Base Camp did so through the council’s initiative.
Since Ladakh’s transition to a Union Territory, there has been a concerted effort to develop its rural tourism sector.
“We are exploring and developing destinations previously untouched,” Chairman Tashi Gyalson added, highlighting the council’s proactive approach to diversifying Ladakh’s tourism offerings.
The festival also served as a platform for community voices, with Sumur Tsogspas advocating for the creation of an artificial lake, reflecting local aspirations for sustainable development.
