Kargil, June 30: Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, conducted an extensive on-site assessment of several damaged water irrigation canals in Thuvina village today. Accompanied by key officials including Chief Engineer PHE and I&FC Ladakh Maqbool Husain, SVD Sankoo, Executive Engineer I&FC, and Executive Engineer PMGSY, Dr. Akhoon addressed critical issues concerning the village’s irrigation infrastructure and other local needs.

During the visit, Dr. Akhoon was informed by Thuvina residents about significant damage to the Bakear irrigation canal, a crucial source of irrigation for the village’s agricultural lands. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the CEC directed the concerned department officials to undertake immediate repairs to restore the canal. “Funds for the repair of the canal will be allocated from my own constituency fund on an urgent basis to alleviate the villagers’ problems,” Dr. Akhoon assured.

Dr. Akhoon was briefed by the Executive Engineer about the damaged irrigation canal under the languishing scheme, confirming that sufficient funds are available for the repairs. He instructed that the entire damaged section of the canal be repaired promptly to ensure its functionality.

The CEC also addressed additional concerns raised by the villagers, including the damage to the Chulungs irrigation pipeline. Dr. Akhoon instructed the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) to repair the pipeline and restore its functionality. He also listened to the residents of Mohallah Yostot, who requested the installation of a separate water pipeline for their area. Dr. Akhoon assured the locals that their request would be considered and addressed as soon as possible.

Furthermore, Dr. Akhoon was briefed about the Gongstab lift irrigation pump, which has been non-operational due to a technical blockage. The CEC directed the AEE to immediately inform the concerned agency to resolve the issue and make the lift irrigation system functional again.

In addition to addressing irrigation concerns, Dr. Akhoon inspected the newly constructed bridge in Thuvina village, which was funded under the CRIF scheme at an estimated cost of 6.5 crores. SVD Sankoo updated the CEC that while the bridge’s main construction is complete, remaining works are still pending. Dr. Akhoon set a deadline for the completion of these tasks by July 20-25, in preparation for the bridge’s inauguration ceremony, which is expected to be graced by Honorable LG Ladakh Brigadier (Dr) B.D. Mishra.

The CEC also visited the proposed site for the new Government Middle School Thuvina building, encouraging villagers to support the construction efforts. He announced that the foundation stone ceremony for the new school building will be held soon and instructed the concerned officer of PDD to install an electric pole near the school site without delay.
