Kargil, June 30: The Mega Eye Surgery Camp organized by AL-REZA Health Care & Research Foundation, in collaboration with ASG Hospital Srinagar and the Department of Health Kargil, has concluded successfully, providing essential eye care services to hundreds of patients in the region.

Over the course of the camp, which took place from June 26 to 28, 2024, a total of 750 patients underwent preliminary examinations and received specialized treatments. The initiative began with preliminary screenings on June 18 and 19, 2024, at Old Hospital Kargil, where cataract patients were identified and scheduled for surgery.

The camp’s focal point was a one-day event held in Sankoo on June 26, 2024, where 250 patients were examined. Subsequently, from June 27 to 28, 2024, 52 cataract surgeries were conducted free of cost. All intraocular lenses used during these surgeries were generously donated by ASG Hospital Srinagar.

Led by Dr. Manzoor Ul Mehdi, a distinguished ophthalmologist and AIIMS alumnus, along with Dr. Mujahid Ali from ASG Hospital, the surgical team employed advanced techniques such as micro-incisional phacoemulsification with posterior chamber foldable IOL implantation under topical anesthesia. Dr. Asiya Noor, Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at District Hospital Kargil, also played a pivotal role in ensuring the surgeries’ success, supported by dedicated ophthalmology assistants.

In addition to cataract surgeries, the camp included procedures like pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting and YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsular opacification, all performed under topical anesthesia.

The Mega Eye Surgical Camp was inaugurated at Old District Hospital on June 26, 2024, by Chief Executive Councillor Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhone, with Deputy Commissioner Srikant Balasahib Suse as the Guest of Honour, and President Jamait Ul Ulema Isna Ashriya Kargil Sheikh Nazir Ul Mehdi Mohammadi in attendance. The camp concluded on June 28, 2024, marking a significant milestone in providing specialized healthcare services to underserved communities in Kargil.

Dr. Manzoor Ul Mehdi, addressing the media, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Kargil and reported that all operated patients were recovering well in their postoperative evaluations. He emphasized the importance of preventive measures like reducing screen time to combat prevalent allergic eye diseases in the region.

Dr. Mohd Abass, President of AL-REZA Health Care & Research Foundation, extended his appreciation to the local authorities and the Kargil administration for their steadfast support. He reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to continuing such humanitarian efforts, underscoring their recent successes with the Mega Minimally Invasive Surgery Camp at District Hospital Kargil.

Sheikh Nazir Mehdi Mohammadi, President of JUIAK, commended the doctors from ASG Hospital Srinagar for their dedication and acknowledged the support of the UT administration, CEC LAHDC Kargil, and Deputy Commissioner Kargil in enhancing healthcare facilities at District Hospital Kargil. He praised the paramedical staff, volunteers, and OT personnel for their commendable contributions and offered prayers for their continued success.
