Rs 131 Cr contracts awarded for Ladakh Power distribution Infra 2027-28 deadline in sight, work to resume soon

Leh, June 28: Moving closer to the execution of the much ambitious power distribution infrastructure enhancement plans in Ladakh, PowerGrid Energy Services Limited, a subsidiary of PowerGrid Corporation of India Limited, have awarded two contracts worth a combined Rs 131.19 Crore to Ramky Infrastructure Limited.
The first contract, valued at Rs 107.39 crore, focuses on the supply of essential equipment and services for the Leh district. The second contract, worth Rs 23.80 crore, involves the installation of plant services in the Kargil district.
Both projects are part of a broader initiative to reduce power distribution losses and are scheduled for completion within 30 months.
These contracts fall under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a comprehensive effort to decrease Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses in Ladakh.
The scheme, with a total sanctioned budget of Rs 687.05 crore, aims to lower AT&C losses from 49.04% in 2021-22 to 27.85% by 2024-25. Key components of the RDSS include grid connectivity in the Changthang region, infrastructure upgrades in the Zanskar region, and specific loss reduction projects in Leh and Kargil.
As part of these projects, Ramky Infrastructure will be responsible for the construction and commissioning of seven 66KV electricity substations and the installation of 70 km of new electricity distribution lines. The company will also refurbish 550 km of existing lines using aerial bundled (AB) cables and install approximately 400 distribution transformers.
Media reports quoted Y. R. Nagaraja, Managing Director of Ramky Infrastructure Limited, expressing satisfaction with the contracts, highlighting the company’s commitment to quality and its capability to manage complex infrastructure projects in challenging terrains. “We are pleased to be awarded these contracts for loss reduction works in Leh district, reflecting our dedication to quality standards. We look forward to executing these projects by late 2027 or early 2028,” Nagaraja stated.
These initiatives are part of the government’s efforts to enhance operational efficiency and financial sustainability in the region’s power sector. The projects also include providing performance-based financial support to distribution companies (DISCOMs) to strengthen the power supply infrastructure, contingent on meeting specific pre-qualifying criteria and achieving key performance benchmarks.
Overall, these projects represent a significant step towards improving the power infrastructure in Ladakh, contributing to the region’s development and ensuring a more reliable and efficient power supply for its residents.
