Leh, June 28: The first-ever Summer Theatre Festival 2024, organized by the National School of Drama (NSD) in collaboration with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS), Leh, continues to captivate audiences with its diverse and rich performances.

On the third day of this historic cultural event, the musical play “Maai Ri Mai Ka Se Kahun” was presented. Directed by Ajay Kumar, the play is based on Vijaydan Detha’s renowned story “Dhuvidha.” The audience at Arya Nagarjuna Auditorium, CIBS, Choglamsar, Leh, was enthralled by the poignant and powerful narrative brought to life through the captivating performances and direction.

The festival began with a grand opening ceremony on June 26, 2024. The inauguration witnessed the esteemed presence of Shri Elijah Gergan, an eminent educationist and philosopher, as the Chief Guest. Adding to the significance of the event were Shri Stanzin Chosphel, Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Leh, Shri Mipham Othsal, a senior NSD alumnus and Sangeet Natak Awardee, and Shri Pradeep K Mohanty, Registrar of NSD. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Rajesh Singh, Chief of the Repertory Company.

The festival’s opening performance, the Indian classical play “Abhijanasakuntalam,” penned by Mahakavi Kalidas and directed by Vidushi Prof. Rita Ganguly, set a high standard for the subsequent shows with its stellar execution and received much acclaim from the audience in Leh.

Continuing the festival’s schedule, the play “Babuji,” written by Vibhanshu Vaibhav and directed by Rajesh Singh, will be presented tomorrow on June 29. The festival will conclude with the celebrated play “Taj Mahal Ka Tender,” written by Ajay Shukla and directed by Chittaranjan Tripathy, which has enjoyed 25 years of successful performances, on June 30.

NSD extends an invitation to theatre aficionados, students, and the general public to attend this festival. With free entry to all shows, this event promises a memorable experience for families and friends, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy the richness of Indian theatre in the serene and picturesque backdrop of Leh-Ladakh.
