LEH: More than 120 runners from 7 different countries of the world participated in the second edition of Pangong frozen lake marathon–the world’s highest frozen lake marathon on Tuesday.
The participants took part in two categories of run –21 km and 10km.
It was organised by Adventure sports foundation of Ladakh with the support of Union Territory Administration and 14 corps Indian army.
Ravinder Kumar Secretary sports was the chief guest of the event accompanied by Konchok Stanzin, Councillor Chushul Constituency.
The main purpose behind this run is to spread awareness about rapid melting Himalayan glaciers titled theastrun implying this could the last run on frozen pangong lake due to the impact of global warming, at the same time to promote winter tourism in places like changthang, an official spokesperson said.
People from pangong areas from Maan, Merak, Spangmik and Phobrang participated in the event along with hosting the runners. They performed various culture performance on the occasion.
“The run was conducted in the midst of heavy snowfall at an altitude of 14,273 ft and with the temperatures dropped to -15, which officially gives us the confidence to declare this as one of the toughest marathon in the world,” the spokesperson said.
