Leh, Jan 28: Prof S. K. Mehta, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ladakh, has emphasized on his institution’s steadfast dedication to cutting-edge research with a specific focus on understanding climate change and biodiversity and their impacts on the ecosystem and societal welfare.

He was speaking during the valedictory ceremony of the 9th edition of India International Science Festival (IISF)- 2023 in Faridabad, Haryana. The theme for this edition was ‘Science and Technology Public Outreach in Amrit Kaal.’

He said, “Ladakh’s reliance on glacial melt water for freshwater faces challenges due to climate change-induced glacial retreat, impacting water availability and intensifying extreme temperature variations. Connectivity hurdles in remote areas further complicate technological access. However, Ladakh’s abundant sunlight and wind resources present a significant potential for renewable energy projects, offering sustainable solutions to combat climate change.”

He further stated, “Ladakh being regarded as an open laboratory for research in several areas, he invited young scientists to visit University of Ladakh for collaborative research. The region is navigating the delicate balance between development, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation in its pursuit of a sustainable future.”

The University of Ladakh stands at the forefront of research addressing Ladakh’s specific needs, encompassing climate adaptation, renewable energy, and cultural preservation, he added and emphasized the importance of empowering local communities through education, while collaborative efforts among institutions, communities, and organizations are deemed crucial to address Ladakh’s multifaceted challenges and resilience.

Prof. Mehta also shed light on the upcoming government solar energy facility in Ladakh, highlighting the region’s strides towards embracing clean and sustainable energy solutions.

The event, considered India’s mega Science Fair, unfolded at the Campus of Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) and Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) under the Department of Biotechnology in Faridabad with an aim to inspire the public at large. The IISF 2023 provided a platform for individuals with diverse interests, including students, educators, scientists, researchers, industry professionals, entrepreneurs, and science communicators and was a huge success.

During the Young Scientists Conference on January 20th, 2024, an interactive session on Science, Technology, and   Innovation in the North East, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh delved into opportunities to cultivate prosperity in India’s future (Samridh Bharat) during Amrit Kal.

The event also featured the New Age Technology Show, facilitating interactions in the startup ecosystem and providing a platform for discussions on Technology and Innovation in a Business-to- Business (B2B) setting.

The success of IISF 2023 was highlighted during the valedictory session, where Dr. P S Goel, Chairman of NIF – India, appreciated all contributors, emphasizing the integration of innovation. The collaborative efforts initiated under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, with the involvement of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Department of Space, and the Department of Atomic Energy, have played crucial roles in the event’s expansion and impact.
