KVK Leh conducted 3 days farming tour to Skiu, Markha, Kaya, Chilling & Sumdha dho villages

Leh, Jan 10: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Leh conducted three days Scientific tour to the villages of Skiu, Markha, Kaya, Chilling and Sumdha dho from January 02 – January 04 2024. The tour was headed by Dr Feroz din Sheikh Professor and Head KVK, Leh.
The tour programme was scheduled with the aim to reach even the un-reach, the villages are located in the famous Markha valley trek route which are now accessible by roads.
Skiu, Kuya and Markha villages are established adjacent to each other alongside the Markha river the number of households were meagre ranging from 17 in markha village, 9 in Skiu, 15 in Kaya, 7 in Chilling and approx. 9 in Sumdha dho still practicing traditional agricultural systems.
While addressing the farmers of the above villages Dr. Feroz din Sheikh gave a brief introduction about the activities being carried out by KVK Leh for the welfare of the farming community. He urged them to take full benefits of all the Services being provided by this kendra along with other state departments.
Dr Kunzang Lamo, SMS Vegetable Science imparted training on the use of latest technologies pertaining to agriculture like use of Plastic mulch for Vegetable production to overcome the issue of moisture scarcity and weeds problem. She also stressed for raising their own seedlings by using Low tunnels and trenches.
She also sensitised farmers about the principles and importance of natural farming as a new resort of farming with the changing climate scenario and asked them to implement the same at their farms.
Hands on training on Improved Agricultural Technologies like use of Low tunnels for raising Healthy Vegetable Nursery, Use of Plastic mulch for vegetable production integrated Pest Management, awareness and demonstration on natural farming were also given by the scientific staff of the Kendra. Animal health was also conducted for on-the-spot treatment of sick animals in those far flung villages.Various inventories like Low tunnel Polythene, Black ‘Plastic Mulch, Agricultural Tool Sets and Veterinary Medicines were also distributed among the villagers during the said tour.
