The World Soil Day campaign aims to connect people with soil and raise awareness on their critical importance in our lives. One of the several ways of connecting people with soil is to restore and preserve the soil health.  World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil resources.

Soil is one of the basic natural resource required for the production of food, feed, fuel and fibre besides services to ecosystems and also it is the reservoir for at least a quarter of global biodiversity, and therefore requires the same attention as above-ground biodiversity.

With the efforts of the international Union of Soil Science (IUSS) and H. M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand, 5th December was officially declared as World soil day at the 68th United Nation General Assembly in December 2013 as this day is marked as the birthday of H. M. The King of Thailand, who officially sanctioned the event.
