Jammu, Oct 02: While the employment between the age group of 15 years and above has increased manifold in the past three years, the unemployment rate especially after the COVID pandemic has dropped by 1.50 percent in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) report the labour employment among youth aged 15 years and above has swollen in Jammu and Kashmir post COVID pandemic and the unemployment rate has dipped.
“The unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir has dropped by 1.50 percent between 2019 and 2022,” a report released by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (PLFS) revealed.
“As per the data issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation report showed that the unemployment rate in the Union Territory was 5.1 per cent in the year 2018-2019 and increased to 6.7 per cent in 2019-2020 but dipped to 5.9 percent in the year 2020-21 and to 5.2 percent in 2021-2022,” said an official.
Notably, earlier this year, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) reported a higher unemployment rate of 23.1 percent for Jammu and Kashmir in March and in January, the unemployment rate in J&K reached 21.8 percent, the highest among all states and Union Territories.
He stated that the report projected the unemployment rate (UR) for youth aged 15 years and above to decline to 5.8 per cent in 2018-19, 4.8 per cent in 2019-20, 4.2 per cent in 2020 and 4.1 per cent in 2021-22, adding, “these figures showed that the economic development is rapidly taking place in Jammu and Kashmir.”
The statistics, official said that show that after Corona, the labour ability among youth aged 15 years and above has increased and the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) stood at 50.2 percent in 2018-19, 53.5 percent in 2019-20, 55.2 percent in 2020-21 and 54.9 percent in 2021-22.
As per the data, from 2019 to 2021, the trend of skilled labour among the youth has witnessed an upward graph, he added.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had also recently announced significant recruitment efforts, stating that over 30,000 government positions have been filled in the last three years, with plans to advertise another 20,000 posts in the coming months.
“The government aims to address the issue of vacant positions in various government departments through an extensive recruitment drive over the next six months,” Sinha had said.
