Leh, Sept 29: In a major boost in exploiting the tourism potential of the Ladakh UT, the Ministry of Home Affairs has opened two more border tourist destinations ‘Marsemik La and Sko valley’ (previously restricted areas) for foreign tourists visiting Ladakh.
The MHA in a circular issued on September 14 stated that with amendment to chapter 24- “protected and Restricted Areas” of the visa manual, 2019, relaxation has been granted for foreign tourists visiting restricted areas ‘Marsemik La and Sko valley’ – close to the strategic Chang Chenmo sector north of Pangong lake in Ladakh.
The decisions will boost border tourism, a key element in the Centre’s strategy to stop migration from border villages/hamlets by creating livelihood opportunities for the inhabitants who act as the eyes and ears of the forces. Allowing foreigners overnight Hanle, notified asa dark sky reserve in December, will boost astro-tourism. Opening up Marsemik La underlines the strategy to reinforce India’s ownership gradually opening up forward areas for tourists.
If reports are to be believed, the department for tourism in Ladakh has requested the MHA for opening more border areas for trekking& tourism for tourists visiting Ladakh UT.
It has been learnt that the MHA has requested the UT Administration to put up adequate civil infrastructure for visitors as it is considering to relax more areas including – Tsogtsalo, a pasture land near the confluence of Rimdi Chu and Chang Chenmo rivers across Marsemik La, and the Hot Springs as well as the Police Memorial in honour of 10 CRPF jawans martyred on October 21, 1959 when their patrol was attacked by the Chinese.
Pertinent to mention here that the inner line permit system for Indians was scrapped in August 2021 but areas close to the disputed parts of LAC largely remained out of bounds for visitors.
