Leh, Sept 20: A delegation from Ladakh Mountaineering & Adventure Club comprising its Secretary, Shri Urgain Loondup and Educationalist, Rev ES Gergan, called on the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at Raj Niwas. Secretary to HLG, Shri Ravinder Kumar, was present in the meeting.

Shri Urgain and Rev Gergan apprised the HLG of the Club which was established in 1993 and comprises 11 founding members, including Everesters. They informed that the objective of the Club is to introduce and engage young school children and unemployed youth of Ladakh in mountaineering and adventure courses, fostering endurance, strength and rock-climbing techniques/skills through various activities.

Shri Urgain and Rev Gergan informed the HLG about the 30 kanal of land along with the rock face at Shey Manla Rock Face allotted to them by the local government near the Sindhu Ghat. They also informed the HLG about their plan to construct the LMAC Campus at Shey and requested financial assistance in this regard.

The HLG commended LMAC for their initiatives and stated that he would discuss the matter with the concerned Department Secretaries and officials for necessary actions.

A delegation from HelpAge India/Elder Line led by the Manager, Elder’s Village, HelpAge India, Shri Dawa Zangpo, called on the HLG at Raj Niwas.

Shri Zangpo informed the HLG that HelpAge India has been working for the cause and care of disadvantaged elderly persons in the country since 1978. He raised the issue of the need for an Elder Policy in Ladakh to provide social justice, income security, health security and shelter to the elderly. He also informed about Elder Line which aims to connect and engage with senior citizens and compassionately serve them through the National Helpline No 14567 and provide assistance, information and support to help them live with dignity. Shri Zangpo informed the HLG that they haven’t received any confirmation from the concerned Ministry on whether to continue the Elder Line in Ladakh or not and requested the HLG for his intervention in this regard.

The HLG asked Shri Zangpo to meet the Commissioner Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Smt Padma Angmo and discuss the matter with her for necessary action.

A delegation comprising horse riders Smt Stanzin Nedon and Smt Stanzin Angmo along with coach Liaqat Ali called on the HLG at Raj Niwas.

Smt Nedon and Angmo informed the HLG that they are from Bodh Kharbu and Zanskar respectively and apprised him of their participation in the LG Polo Cup. They also informed that despite being among the top polo players/horse riders, they were not called for the trials in Kargil for the selection of horse riders/polo players for polo training under the President’s Body Guard (PBG). They requested a fair trial for the selection of the best horse riders/polo players for the said training under PBG.

The HLG instructed Deputy Commissioner, Kargil to conduct a fair selection trial in Kargil to select good riders from Kargil who could be sent to Delhi for polo training under the President’s Body Guard.
