Jammu, Sept 18: To further augment the war capabilities of the Indian Army, anti-GPS jamming devices will soon be introduced for enhancing its professional functioning.

Reliable sources said that anti-GPS jamming device technique will protect drones, vehicles and other GPS enabled devices from the enemy.

“Moreover, a new technology loaded device is also coming up that will be introduced into the camp of the Indian Army to locate and trace the enemies,” sources said.

They revealed that in the complex environment of the battlefield, it is very important for soldiers to know about the presence of their commanders, vehicles, helicopters and other weaponry and this technique has been made as Identification Friend or Fo (IFF).

“Jammu IIT has taken the responsibility of this invention while seven major projects, including anti-GPS jamming and IFF devices, are also part of the joint design and development being carried out by IIT Jammu and defense sector company CST Advanced Systems,” sources added.

They added that the company has collaborated with IIT Jammu and is working on these projects of national importance out of which, two projects are nearly complete.

“One of these projects is anti-GPS jamming devices that will have a small size, lightweight powerful device suitable to be retrofitted to protect any navigation system,” they added and said that it will also prevent GPS based equipment of the army and security forces from being jammed during anti-terrorist operations.

“The second project to be completed is the IFF, a device that will help the Army in counter-insurgency or counter-terrorist operations or in locating its forces on the battlefield. It works on RF (Radio Frequency) network and in any condition whether day or night, is capable of locating troops even in bad weather or poor visibility,” sources added.

They revealed that during anti-terrorist operations along the Line of Control and in the hinterland, it is a challenge to protect all GPS based devices from jamming.

“The enemy’s first attempt is to disable GPS based devices but technology based anti-GPS jamming devices will professionally tackle this threat,” they said.

“It can be fitted to protect any navigation system and the CST Advanced Systems Company designs and develops communication and monitoring equipment. The company has been supplying such equipment since the year 2018,” official said.

He added that the IFF is designed for an integrated and complex battlefield and identifies its soldiers through GPS, sensors and RF communications.

“Its objective is to avoid any risk along the International Border, Line of Control, during counter-terrorist operations and raids, patrolling, ambushes and counter-terrorist operations. The device can be installed or attached to soldiers, vehicles, tanks, drones and helicopters and will give the soldiers an idea even during poor visibility to hit the target,” they added.
