Leh, Sept 16: Ladakh Pollution Control Committee (LPCC), UT of Ladakh celebrated International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer today in the presence of the chief guest Chief Conservator of Forests, Sajjad Hussain Mufti (IFS) Regional Director, Ladakh Pollution Control Committee, Aditya Madanpotra (IFS) and Ruksana Praveen, District Officer, Ladakh Pollution Control Committee.
To commemorate the day an awareness event was organized involving the school students of Imamia Model School, Choglamsar.
A total of 200 students participated in the event where drawing and elocution competitions were organized on the theme “Montreal Protocol: Fixing the Ozone Layer and Reducing Climate Change.” And related to the phrase out the substance that depletes ozone.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest, Sajjad Hussain Mufti briefed the students about the importance of the ozone layer, the causes of its depletion, and ways to protect it.
The Regional Director of Ladakh Pollution Control Committee, Aditya Madanpotra highlighted the role of the ozone layer in ensuring the survival of humanity.
Later, the chief guest distributed prizes among the winners of the painting competition. While, Regional Director, LPCC, and District Officer, LPCC, distributed prizes to the winners of the elocution competition.
In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16th September as the International Day of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing in 1987 of the Montreal Protocol on the Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (resolution 49/114).
