Chennai (TN), Sept 14: Amit Sharma, Secretary Transport, Union Territory of Ladakh emphasised that public self awareness and consciousness is pivotal for reducing road accidents and crashes during an all-important Road Safety Summit 2023 held at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras wherein he was invited as a Special Guest and a Keynote Speaker. Apart from him, the inaugural session of this event held was attended by Chief Secretary Tamil Nadu Shiv Das Meena, Additional CS Highways TN, Pradeep Yadav, Director IIT Madras Prof Kamakoti, Commissioner of Police Greater Chennai Sandeep Rai Rathore amongst others.
Secretary Transport Ladakh Amit Sharma was invited in this important Road Safety Awareness event held at IIT Madras to share his perspectives over maintaining safety in Indian roads, being an expert on the subject, having previous and current background of handling transport department in hilly UTs of North Bharat.
Secretary Transport Ladakh, in his articulate address to a jam-packed T.T Jagannathan Auditorium of IIT Madras, shared his thoughts in the first technical session held here wherein Amit mentioned that apart from installing Smart Road Safety Devices like Speed Guns, Crash Barriers, Highway Rescue and Patrol teams, it is the primarily the public in-general who has to take the lead, in understanding the fall-outs of rash driving, not following traffic rules, allowing minors to drive, drunken driving and many others instances which lead towards fatalistic crashes, often. He advised that self-awareness and adherence to traffic advisories issued from time-to-time must be followed to ensure minimum loss of human lives due to accidents and there should be no usage of mobile phones while driving the vehicles.
Secretary Transport Amit Sharma appreciated the constant endeavours being made by IIT Madras Centre of Excellence in this domain by Prof Venkatesh and his team and also expressed that maximum awareness rallies and expeditions should be organised all across the nation, especially on the Himalayan Roads for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles which shall be always welcomed by the UT Administration, led by the visionary and dynamic leadership of Lieutenant Governor Brig (Dr) B.D Mishra (Retd) and Advisor Pawan Kotwal whenever such initiatives are taken in Ladakh.
Secretary Ladakh Amit Sharma also shared that next week, a three-day seminar, with support of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Bharat Sarkar, is being organised in Ladakh next week to make public and officers aware about the latest traffic and transport management practices, as it would help to have a better understanding on the subject, especially for the common citizens, which is the need of the hour.
Before culmination, the august gathering appreciated the innovative thoughts shared by Special Guest Amit Sharma for here in IIT Madras Campus for which he was felicitated by the dignitaries who further requested him to support all forthcoming initiatives to be taken in Road Safety Domain in the Hilly UT of Ladakh in times to come towards which he assured full support of the UT Administration before leaving the venue.
