LEH: Amina Khatoon, in her childhood, used to drink water directly from the stream, but unfortunately, over time, it became polluted due to the actions of some locals. As a result, she had to resort to fetching water from a nearby spring, but even that source eventually started to run dry. With limited options left, she was forced to travel long distances by car to fetch water for her daily needs.
But now the situation has completely changed in her picturesque village namely Chuchot Yogma in Leh district as all its 227 households have got access to clean water at their doorstep and the credit for it goes to Centre Govt’s ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) scheme.
Amina Khatoon is all praise for UT Administration and deeply grateful for life-changing initiative. “Thankfully, our prayers were answered with this Jal Jeevan Mission. Now, we are fortunate to have access to quality water right at our houses. This transformation has been immensely beneficial for all of us in Chuchot Yogma,” she said.
In a remarkable display of community empowerment, Chuchot Yogma has achieved a major milestone in providing clean and accessible water to all of its 227 households. The successful completion of this noble mission has not only relieved the rural citizens of the burden of fetching water from distant sources but has also significantly improved their overall health and well-being.
The endeavour began with a comprehensive assessment of the village’s water requirements, which helped identify the most suitable solution for their specific needs. After careful consideration, the Village Water and Sanitation Committee supported the PHE department to prepare the Village Action Plan, and decision was made to establish a robust water distribution network, ensuring every household had access to a clean and reliable water source.
With the completion of this ambitious project, the villagers now have access to clean and safe water right at their doorsteps. The physical exertion of hauling heavy containers over long distances has become a thing of the past, thereby sparing the community from the drudgery they once faced on a daily basis.
The success story of Chuchot Yogma village serves as an inspiring example for other rural communities facing similar challenges. It highlights the importance of collective action, community engagement, and the transformative power of access to clean water. The initiative not only freed the villagers from the burden of fetching water but also paved the way for a healthier and more prosperous future.
With Chuchot Yogma leading the way, it is hoped that other regions will be inspired to undertake similar projects, transforming the lives of rural citizens and fostering progress in the realm of public health.
