JAMMU: As infrastructural development is taking place on war footing across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the twin capital cities—Jammu and Srinagar—will soon get Metro Lines for which the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is in the pipeline.
Official sources said that the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha headed administration has proposed two metro lines in Srinagar and Jammu cities and the proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for consultation.
“The twin capital cities will get Metro Rails for which the Metro Lines has been proposed by the administration,” sources said.
They added that the Jammu Light Rail System will have a 23-kilometer length with 22 stations between Bantalab and Bari Brahmana; whereas Srinagar Light Rail System will have a 25-kilometer length which included 12.5-kilometer length from Indira Nagar to HMT Junction and 12.5-kilometer length from Hazuri Bagh to Usmanabad with 24 stations (12 stations on each corridor).
“These would be the first metro lines in the region and are expected to improve public transportation in both cities,” they said.
Notably, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in December 2021 in a written reply in the LoK Sabha said that the Jammu and Srinagar were two among the five cities that requested financial support from the Centre.
“As MetroLite system since a metro line on the pattern in Delhi is not feasible for Jammu and Kashmir but deliberations were held on approving a MetroNeo for Srinagar and Jammu, but as of now, MetroLite is a preferred option,” they added.
“The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Metro Line is in the pipeline and implementation is stressed upon with a time frame of completing the project in two to three years from the date of commencement,” they added.
“The elevated Metro Rail System will not only facilitate the people but also have a positive impact on the economy and quality of life. The project for the two cities will be cost-effective and a leap towards sustainable public transport,” said an official.
