KARGIL: Zanskar is on the verge of becoming the first sub-division in the Union Territory of Ladakh to achieve 100 percent saturation in the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). This was informed by Commissioner Secretary Ajeet Kumar Sahu, who while a comprehensive review of the JJM works in Zanskar, urged the Public Health Engineering(PHE) officers and Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members to make a final push to complete the remaining tasks in all villages within the next 15 days.

The centrally funded JJM is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. The programme will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation and rain water harvesting.

During the meeting, Sahu emphasised the importance of ensuring water availability to every household even during winters and prompt action to rectify any remaining shortcomings.

He commended the PRI members for their active cooperation and effective leadership in successfully accomplishing this challenging assignment to the satisfaction of the local residents.

Prior to the meeting with officers and PRI members, Sahu toured Lungnak block and visited the Phuktal Monastery where the monks sought early completion of the road leading to the monastery.

Sahu also held a meeting with the officers of the Project Yojak, DC Keylong, DFO Kelong, and SDM Kyalong of Himachal Pradesh to review the progress of the Nimu-Padum-Darcha Road and address any obstacles hindering the creation of unencumbered corridors. BRO officers raised the need for an emergency response unit and an ambulance near Kargiak, considering the increased passenger movement through the Shinkun La region.

During the tour, Sahu also inspected the ongoing and proposed PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana) and CRIF (Central Road Infrastructure Fund) roads in the region and issued the necessary directions to ensure their timely completion.

Accompanying Commissioner/Secretary A.K. Sahu were Lakshay Singhal, Additional Secretary PWD, and Executive Director SIDCO UT Ladakh, SDM Zanskar, Sonam Dorjey, SE PHE Kargil, Executive Engineers of PHE, PMGSY and other related officers.
