Substance abuse has become a major problem in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory in recent years. In fact, the drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir is big a menace as the terrorism, as has been seen over the past years. Like the terrorism, the drug menace also majorly draws its roots from the neighbouring country.

Pakistan’s spy agency ISI’s has been trying and mostly succeeding to push drugs into the Indian territory, to fuel terrorism, the security agencies have flagged from time to time.

Not only this gives them the funds to operate terrorism but also an opportunity to use the Indian youth to gather inputs about Indian security forces deployed across the union territory. The use of drugs and other harmful substances has spread among all sections of society, from young students to professionals and even the elderly across the UT. The reasons for this epidemic are complex, but it is clear that urgent remedial measures are needed to address this crisis.

One of the main reasons for the rise in substance abuse in Jammu and Kashmir is the increase in availability of drugs and other harmful substances, besides lack of proper and cent percent countering measures. The UT shares borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, which are known for their high production of drugs like opium and heroin. The easy availability of these drugs has led to an increase in addiction rates. Moreover, the lack of awareness and education about the dangers of drug abuse has also contributed to the growing problem. Another important factor is the lack of support and rehabilitation services for those who are struggling with addiction. Many people who suffer from substance abuse in Jammu and Kashmir are reluctant to seek help due to the stigma associated with addiction.

This is further compounded by the lack of adequate facilities and trained professionals to provide support and treatment. To address this issue, the administration must take proactive measures to curb the availability of drugs and other harmful substances. Increasing surveillance and policing efforts at the borders, as well as through public awareness campaigns to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse could be some measures. The government should provide funding for the establishment of rehabilitation centers and other support services for those struggling with addiction.

There is also an important role for civil society organizations and individuals to play in addressing the issue of substance abuse in J&K. Community-based interventions like peer support groups and counselling services, can be effective in providing a safe and supportive environment for those struggling with addiction. Such interventions can also help to reduce stigma and promote a more compassionate approach to addiction.

Another important step is to improve access to education and employment opportunities for young people in the UT. Many people turn to drugs and other harmful substances due to a lack of opportunities and a sense of hopelessness about the future. By providing access to education and employment, the government can help to create a sense of purpose and hope for young people, reducing the likelihood that they will turn to drugs. By working together, we can address this crisis and create a healthier and more prosperous future for the people in Jammu and Kashmir.
