KARGIL: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh concluded his 5-day-long visit to the Kargil district, where reached out to public to take stock of developmental issues and the problems they face in their day-to-day life.

Mishra visited the Pashmina Goat Farm at Khangral in Shakar-Chiktan block on the last day of his tour to Kargil and inquired about the mortality rate of kids of pashmina goats, the difference in the quality of pashmina wool of the goats reared in Changthang and government-run farms, the pashmina wool provided by each goat, the fodder provided to the goats and the availability of medical facilities for the pashmina goats, etc.

In-charge Director, Animal Husbandry Department, UT Ladakh, Dr Mohammad Iqbal briefed LG that there was zero mortality of kids of pashmina goats this year. He also informed that the quality of pashmina wool produced by pashmina goats in Changthang is better than that at the government-run farms due to the cold climatic conditions in which the pashmina goats in Changthang live.

Informing that the cold climate is better to ensure good quality pashmina wool, he said that the quality of pashmina wool of pashmina goats at government-run farms is better as they are kept in the open.

Dr Iqbal informed that the goats are sold to farmers at a meagre rate after they achieve the age of seven years. He also informed that bucks yield around 400 grams of pashmina. He further informed about the availability of paramedic staff and doctors for the treatment of pashmina goats, the fodder provided to them and the efforts being made to bring more areas under green cover through the sprinkling irrigation system to ensure more fodder for the goats.

The LG appreciated the efforts made by the Department for the development of pashmina goats and informed about the plans to promote pashmina as an indigenous product of Ladakh to improve livelihood opportunities of rearers and the people engaged in the pashmina wool industry.
