Kargil: A delegation comprising Sajjad Hussain Kargili and Mohd Mehdi called on the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at Raj Niwas.
Mehdi informed LG about the potential of saffron in Ladakh and his initiative to grow saffron in his garden on a trial basis almost five years ago. He also informed about the quality, flavour and colour of the saffron grown in his garden. He requested the need to promote the cultivation of saffron in Ladakh.
Mehdi informed about his plan to grow saffron at Minjee and Kanor villages on a trial basis. He also informed about various other initiatives taken by him to harvest honey on a trial basis, cultivate mulberry leaves, black currant, B 17-rich wild apricots, etc.
LG stated that the UT Administration is planning to promote saffron and tulip in Ladakh due to their potential as cash crops for the benefit of farmers/entrepreneurs from Ladakh. He informed about the plan to implement at a small-level on the Private Public Partnership (PPP) model. He assured to assist Shri Mehdi in procuring saffron bulbs and marketing of saffron.
