LEH: Claiming to have built the best electricity infrastructure to provide power supply in every village of the union territory of Ladakh, the administration and the concerned department is left exposed since several villages lack proper electricity infra.

Still villages including Tsazar and adjoining areas face several challenges in terms of electricity infrastructure. The lack of electric poles and other necessary infrastructure in far-flung areas of the UT has led to a shortage of electricity supply, making life difficult for the people living there.

The continuous fluctuation, frequent power cuts, and shortage of electricity not only affects the day-to-day life of the people but also hampers the development of the region.

However, several measures can be taken by the government and the concerned department focusing on increasing investment in the electricity sector in the region including construction of new power plants and the installation of additional transmission lines to ensure that round the clock electricity reaches all parts of the region.

One of the residents told The Earth News that despite claims of the government they face severe problems in enjoying 24X7 power supply. “Besides developing up to the mark infrastructure, the government must explore alternative sources of energy to address the electricity shortage in the region. Ladakh is a region that receives abundant sunlight throughout the year. So, solar power can be an ideal source of energy to meet the electricity requirements of the region without needing costly infra,” the resident said.

He added that the concerned department under relevant schemes can encourage the installation of solar panels in households and businesses to generate electricity. This can be done by providing subsidies to individuals and businesses that invest in solar power.

Another local social worker said that focus on improving the existing electricity infrastructure in the region is the actual need in Ladakh. “Repair and maintain existing electricity infrastructure, including electric poles, transformers, and transmission lines,” he appealed to the government for the same and added that the government for the greater good of people should invest in the installation of smart grids, which can help in the efficient distribution of electricity and reduce energy losses with least electricity infrastructure.

Since lack of electricity infrastructure in far flung villages of Ladakh UT being a significant challenge, it needs to be addressed urgently. The government shall encourage the use of energy-efficient appliances in households and businesses which would help in reducing the demand for electricity and ensure that the existing infrastructure can meet the electricity requirements of the region.
