LEH: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh, Tashi Gyalson stressed for urgently implementing an integrated waste management system in the Nubra region.

The CEC made these remarks while conducting a comprehensive meeting with officers from the Indian Army, Indian Airforce, and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) stationed in the Nubra region.

The discussions primarily focused on the urgent need for an integrated waste management system in the Nubra region.

CEC Gyalson highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between the Civil Administration and the Armed Forces in addressing waste management challenges, particularly in light of growing concerns for the preservation of the natural environment.

The strengthening of the Solid Resource Management Centre at Hunder and other key locations in the region was also discussed during the meeting.

Additionally, the meeting discussed the feasibility of introducing commercial flight services to the Nubra region and other important issues.

Dy Chairman Tsering Angchuk, EC Minority Affairs Ghulam Mehdi, Councillor Panamik Tsering Sangdup, Councillor Tegar Rigzen Lundup, Councillor Hunder Kunzang Lotus, BDC Diskit Stanzin Gyatso, ADDC Leh Sonam Nurboo, SDM Nubra Dorjey Gyaltsan, Station Commander 19 FBSU Airforce Thoise, Deputy Commander 102 Infantry Brigade C/O 56 APO, and the Officer Commanding 54 RCC GREF, BRO were present during the meeting.

Furthermore, CEC Tashi Gyalson visited the Sub-District Hospital in Diskit, Nubra, to review developmental issues and engage with the doctors and staff. During the visit, he commended the medical team for the successful execution of the first-ever Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy surgery at SDH Diskit.

Meanwhile, Gyalson convened a comprehensive meeting with all the public representative and the stakeholders comprising of all socio-religious and political organisations of Nubra region at the conference hall of SDM’s office, Diskit today.

The stakeholders expressed their dissatisfaction with the current state of wildlife boundaries, emphasising that undue restrictions have been imposed by the wildlife department and termed the 1987 notification vague that covers the entire Nubra valley area.

They added that the notification requires further legal interpretation to determine its validity, and the interpretation of sanctuary boundaries contradicts the areas mentioned in the notification. They added that as a result, the people of Nubra are experiencing significant losses in the tourism and land-based economy sectors.

Councillors of Nubra region led by Dy Chairman, Tsering Angchuk also raised major issues especially the need for rationalisation of Wildlife notified boundaries of Nubra region. He also highlighted the progress being made through the UT Administration Ladakh led by the Lieutenant Governor in this regard.

CEC emphasised and said that the notification of wildlife boundaries in the year 1987 for Ladakh has many contentious points and genuinely required more clarity in order to address the grievances of the people.

He also emphasised that the Hill Council, Leh is working proactively in the interest of the people of Leh Ladakh, especially the people of Nubra, Changthang and Markha valley and to resolve the issue.

He further informed that the Hill Council, Leh is actively monitoring the ongoing rationalisation process at the UT level. He added that the Council has already raised concerns with the UT Administration, urging them to take adequate measures to protect the best interests of the people of Ladakh, especially those residing in Nubra. CEC Gyalson expressed optimism that the rationalisation exercise conducted by the UT Administration, with the positive support of the Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh, will produce favorable outcomes for the people of the region.
