Drass demands district status, delimitation

KARGIL: Demands including district status for Drass as well as its delimitation, reservation of seats for women in hill council, issuance of ALC certificate and celebration of Salaam Kargil week were among the major demands put forth by a number of delegations who met Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) during his visit to Drass on the third day of his tour to Kargil.

Those who met the Lieutenant Governor on Monday include Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Mubarak Shah Naqvi; Chairperson, BDC Bhimbat, Majuma Banoo; Chairperson, BDC Upper Block Drass, Noor Mohammad; sweepers & mid-day meal cooks, Himalayan Sports & Cultural Development Organisation, Qadeem Markazi Hanfia Jamia Masjid, Chowdery Bazar Drass, Hotel Union & Taxi Union Drass and Megha company workers.

The delegations raised a number of issues including district status for Drass; delimitation of Drass constituency; lack of medical staff at Sub-District Hospital at Drass; establishing Drass Development Authority to promote tourism activities; creation of posts at SDM Office; intervention in resolving issue between villagers and Indian Army due to a stadium in Lakthang; reservation of seats for women in upcoming LAHDC Kargil elections; declare Bhimbet as model village; restore irrigation canals; the construction of roof of the ice hockey rink at Bhimet along with promotion of sports activities in Drass; allocate Border Development funds; start SRTC buses services; open Drass-Gurez Road; issue ALC certificate to people from Drass; widening of roads; construct soak pits for JJM beneficiaries; develop a Wild Tulip Garden; engage youth in construction of Zoji-La tunnel; construct dam at Goshan; 108 ambulance facilities for the public; enhancement of wages; inclusion of history and culture of Shin-Dard of Ladakh as a course in Ladakhi literature at University of Ladakh; open Aryan Study Centre at GDC Drass; open High Altitude Biodiversity Centre and Centre for Défence Studies; provide assistance in reconstruction of Qadeem Markazi Hanfia Jamia Masjid; engagement of the services in the company instead of working under the contractor and issues due to delay in releasing salary on time, celebration of Salaam Kargil Week from July 1 to 5th every year as part of Kargil Vijay Diwas, etc.

The LG assured to look into the matter of all the delegates.

EC LAHDC Kargil, Mubarak Shah Naqvi; Councillor, Bhimet, Syed Mohammad Shah; Chairperson, BDC Bhimbat, Majuma Banoo; Chairperson, BDC Upper Block Drass, Noor Mohammad; Secretary to LG, Ravinder Kumar; Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Santosh Sukhdeve; SSP Kargil, Anayat Ali Chaudhary and other district officials were present during the meeting.
