LEH/ KARGIL: Holding rallies, walkathons, cycling expeditions and awareness sessions Ladakh union territory celebrated World Bicycle Day focusing on bettering healthcare and protecting the fragile environment in the region.
The Health and Family Welfare Department under the National Programme for Non-Communicable Diseases organized Cycle rally on the occasion of World Bicycle Day under the theme ‘Cycle for Health’.
The Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh Adv. Tashi Gyalson flagged off the Cycle rally from SNM Hospital Leh.
Before the flag-off, Dechan, DPO, Health Department Leh welcomed the guests and threw light on the importance of celebrating World Bicycle Day.
It is pertinent to mention that NCDs are accounting for more than 63% of deaths in the country. Cardiovascular diseases cause 27%, Cancer cause 9%, Respiratory Diseases 11% and Diabetes contributes to 3% of deaths in India.
The aim of organizing the cycle rally was to sensitize people about the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle to keep various lifestyle diseases such as Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular and Stroke away.
Director Health/Mission Director NHM, Ladakh along with 80 cyclists including health professionals, NHM Staff, Officers of UT administration, Ladakh Cycling Club and others paddled 31 km long distance Commencing from SNM Hospital Leh- Choglamsar – Shey via Shashi Bridge-Chuchot -Choglamsar bridge , Concluded at NDS Stadium Leh.
Refreshment Services were installed at different locations for cyclists during the Cyclothone.
Similar Cyclothones were also held in District HQ Kargil and all Blocks of the Union Territory Ladakh on the occasion of World Bicycle Day.
Meanwhile, the Tourism Department, Kargil in collaboration with Downhill Kargil observed World Bi-Cycle Day, 2023 and organized a cycle rally in Kargil.
AD Tourism, Kargil, Agha Syed Toha, Tehsildar Kargil Kacho Asgar Ali, President and other officials of Downhill Kargil and around 30 cyclists participated in the cycle rally.
On the occasion, all the cyclists thanked the Tourism Department and Downhill Kargil for giving them the opportunity to ride bicycles on this day. The cycle rally started from TFC to the main market Kargil and vice-versa.
The theme for World Bicycle Day 2023 is ‘Riding Together for a Sustainable Future’. The AD Tourism talked about the importance of cycle rally in terms of pollution free transport and easy physical exercise.
Host from Downhill, Kargil, Fareeda Bano, thanked all the departments and participants for taking part in the celebration of World Bi-Cycle Day, 2023. This day helps promote the use of bicycles and contributes to a cleaner environment.
District Health Society Kargil in Collaboration with Trespone Sports Club Kargil organised a Bicycle Rally in Trespone.
Similarly, National Social Service (NSS) unit and Physical Education Department, University of Ladakh, Leh Campus organised a Cycle Rally to celebrate the Day. The day is aimed at making people more active through simple activities, including cycling.
The Coordinator, Dr Jigmat Dachen, flagged-off the rally from the Campus in the presence of the other staff members.
The Cycle Rally commenced from University Campus to Taru Tokpo and back, covering around 5 kms.
At Khaltse, on the occasion of World Bicycle Day, a 4km cycle rally was organised by Block Medical Office headed by Block Medical Officer, Dr Nurboo Angchuk, in which students from various schools in Khaltse participated.
