LEH: Elected Councillor of the all-powerful hill council of Leh, Konchok Stanzin flagged the occupation of Demchok’s Zorawar Fort by Chinese Army, but was met with stern responses from a number of people who lashed out at him for ‘sensationalising’ an old development.
Konchok Stanzin, the elected Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh from Chushul tweeted a picture he claimed of Zorawar Fort in Demchok, which has been occupied by China in the union territory.
“Demchok’s Zorawar Fort at that point in time is now converted into a Chinese Observation Point,” tweeted the councillor.

“Both double stories at New Construction Area (NCA) and the big Observation Point at Demchok started in 2010 and were completed in 2012. It’s a fact that OP’s location is Zorawar Fort at that point in time,” he added.
However, the tweet did not go well with a number of Twitter users, who left hostile replies on the micro-blogging site, some of which were deleted later.
“You are sensationalising an old development,” replied a user, but deleted the tweet later.
Another user hit out at Konchok Stanzin, asking him how would he define the word ‘now’ in his tweet.
“The tweet was posted on May 30, 2023 at 10:41 PM whereas the Chinese observatory is there since before 2013,” asked the user.
“NOW? when? 2012 is NOW?,” said another user.
“You have seen (this) today only? your eyesight (must be) very weak,” wrote another user, a journalist.
“This fort is with China before 59,” read another reply.
The fort, it may be mentioned, was erected after General Zorawar Singh, a military genius in mountain warfare and governor under Maharaja Gulab Singh, who significantly expanded the territories of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir during the early 19th century.
