LEH: In a significant development, the maiden meeting of the Executive Council of Sindhu Central University to be established in the union territory of Ladakh was held on Tuesday.
Commissioner Secretary, Higher Education Department of Ladakh, Padma Angmo attended the Executive Council meeting virtually, with the officials of Higher Education department of the union Education Ministry.
“Discussions were held on the appointment of Key functionaries for the upcoming Sindhu Central University,” officials informed.
The union ministry of education last year had invited the applications for the post of the Vice-Chancellor of Sindhu Central University in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
“The meeting discussed the various applications received so far,” The Earth News learnt.
The meeting was informed that land has been identified for the Sindhu Central University campus at Khaltsi Village, around a 100 KMs from Leh and 120 KMs from Kargil, situated about 2 KM far from the national highway on the shore of Sindhu River.
“The sprawling campus spread over 110 Acres will be developed at a hill top,” the meeting was informed.
The meeting also discussed mentorship of IIT Madras and Kanpur. Besides, detailed deliberations were also held on the infrastructure resource planning, operations and management of the varsity, officials informed.
The Sindhu Central University was approved by the Union Cabinet in July 2021 and the union government had introduced an amendment in the Central Universities Act, 2009, in Lok Sabha on August 5, 2021, on the second anniversary of the creation of the union territory of Ladakh.
The Sindhu Central University, catering for higher education and intellectual growth, will come up at a cost of Rs 750 crore, would function synergistically with University of Ladakh, complementing each other, the Centre had informed.
The Sindhu Central University would mostly have different subjects than the ones being offered by University of Ladakh.
The name of the university was given as Sindhu or Indus river after considerable deliberation under Home Minister Amit Shah as the government wanted a name that covered not only Ladakh but Ladakh and beyond as the map of the Ladakh UT incorporates Pakistan occupied Areas of Gilgit and Baltistan.
