LEH: The government of Union territory Tuesday put a complete ban on use of Nylon Strings (Manjha) in Ladakh UT.
According to the order issued by the competent authority, The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in its order dated 11.07.2017 in Original Application No. 384 of 2016, and Original Application No. 442 of 2016, has directed, “That there shall be a total ban on the Manjha or thread for kite flying which is made of Nylon or any synthetic material and or is coated with synthetic substance and is non-biodegradable.”
Whereas, it was directed that, under the provisions of Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. No person shall manufacture, sell store, purchase, use engage in other connected advertisement or activity promotion and transportation of synthetic Manjha in the entire Union Territory of Ladakh.
Any violation of above directions will lead to punishment under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the Prevention of Cruelty of Animal Act, 1960, the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and the Indian Penal Code.
Therefore, violation of these directions issued under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 or the rules made there under shall be punishable under Section 15 of the said Act which includes imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine which may extend to one lakh rupees, or with both.
