LEH: The district administration here has decided to adopt the past practice of barring the movement of Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) within the Leh city, in one of the many measures to deal with the heavy traffic congestion here.

The Leh city is facing the heavy traffic congestion after the recent opening of National Highways.

A meeting in this regard was held under the chairmanship of District Magistrate Leh, Shrikant Suse to address heavy traffic congestion in Leh city and to ensure smooth vehicular movement, considering the recent opening of National Highways, said an official spokesperson.

The meeting was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police Leh, Superintendent of Police Security Ladakh, Additional Deputy Commissioner Leh, and concerned officials of defence forces.

After a careful deliberation, it was decided in the meeting that to manage traffic effectively and reduce congestion, the movement of all HMVs will be restricted within Leh city between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM daily as per past practice.

“The primary objective is to improve traffic flow, alleviate congestion, and enhance commuting experiences for residents and visitors. These measures aim to optimize road safety in Leh city,” said the spokesperson.

Necessary directions were issued to traffic police to coordinate with all the stakeholders for the effective implementation.

The District Administration, Leh and Ladakh police LP Leh seek cooperation of all the stakeholders and general public and urge to comply with these regulations in the interest of the community, the spokesperson added.

It may be mentioned that Spalzes Angmo, a hotelier from Leh had met Lieutenant Governor B D Mishra on Thursday and informed him about the issues faced by them by the Traffic Police in picking up and dropping off tourists from their hotels.

SP Traffic, Mujeeb Ur Rehman, who was also present in the meeting, had informed LG about the efforts made by them to ensure there is no traffic congestion, especially in the Leh main market area. He further informed that the Traffic Police give the hoteliers enough time for picking up and dropping off tourists.

LG had instructed that traffic law should be strictly followed by everyone.

He also instructed that no space should be reserved/blocked/segregated for VIPs. He further instructed to take stringent action against Traffic Police personnel found engaged in using foul language and harassing the public.
