Jammu: Eyeing a good show in all upcoming political contests in Jammu and Kashmir, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has constituted new teams and chalk-out booth centric strategies to sweep Urban Local Bodies elections, which is due at the end of 2023.
As per party sources, BJP aims a clean sweep in ensuing Urban Local Bodies (ULB) poll.
“In consultations with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), BJP party constituted various committees to keep focus on their assigned wards and remain in constant contact with party workers, so that in case of elections party candidates easily touch each and every booth, “a party insider told The News Now.
He added that as corporation elections are around the corner and are expected to be held before the end of 2023 the party recently formed the body of Urban and Local Bodies Cell.
“The newly appointed members of the cells have been assigned the task to keep track of political developments in their respective areas as members in these cells are either members of corporations and councils,” the sources quoted above said.
The last ULB elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in October 2018. The term of the Present Corporation and council would end in the next 6 months.
Sources said that BJP General Secretary (Organization) Ashok Koul also interacted with new teams and directed them to put some hard work on ground to ensure clean sweep victory for BJP in all the upcoming political contests.
Koul said that Urban & Local Bodies Cell has to play a vital role in the upcoming and asked to keep mobilizing the party cadre in the right perspective to ensure thumping victory in every single poll in the UT, to ensure a good show in the ensuing Assembly polls.
Pertinently, as per the statistics, in year 2018 BJP swept the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) elections and made some advances in Kashmir by winning over 100 wards in the Valley, in the four-phased ULB elections in the state that were marred by boycott by the NC and PDP. However, independent candidates emerged as the single largest group in the elections in Kashmir by winning 178 wards across 42 municipal bodies in Kashmir division, including Leh and Kargil, elections authorities said.
The Congress was ahead of the BJP in the Valley by bagging 157 wards, while the saffron party won in 100 wards.
The BJP emerged as the single largest party in 12 municipal bodies, it has a majority in five of these bodies. The Congress was the single largest party in 15 bodies, having a majority in 11 of them.
The BJP, which had won the Ladakh constituency in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, got a drubbing from the Congress in Leh and Kargil civic bodies. The saffron party failed to open its account in the two bodies while Congress bagged all 13 seats in Leh and six seats in Kargil.
In Jammu, the Congress suffered a big loss in the election, winning only 14 seats in the 75-member house.
Independent candidates won 18 seats in the JMC. The party this time bettered its previous strength of 25 in the House.
In the rest of the 446 wards spread across Jammu region covering a total of 36 municipal committees and councils, the BJP had an edge over its rivals in 15 bodies followed by Independents in 12 and the Congress in five, they said.
The BJP won a total of 169 seats in these bodies followed by independents at 167 and the Congress at 96, the officials said.
