Leh: Ladakh Legal Services Authority has established a special court under POCSO Act for a speedy trial in the recent rape and attempted murder of a minor girl in Leh.

This was informed by Member Secretary of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority, Spalzes Angmo who had called on the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at Raj Niwas on Thursday.

In a heart-wrenching incident, a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man who also tried to kill her in Leh district on March 29. The police, however, solved the case within 48 hours and has arrested the accused.

During their meeting on Thursday, the LG inquired if the recent case of rape and attempted murder of a minor girl in Leh can be put on fast track for a speedy trial to provide justice to the victim and her family members.
Spalzes informed the LG that a Special Court under POCSO Act has been established to provide a speedy trial in the case.

The LG also inquired about the suo-moto cognizance taken by the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court of the increasing number of dog bite cases in Ladakh and the public interest litigation (PIL) initiated on the issue.
He highlighted the need for various measures such as the sterilisation of the dogs and using dog collars to keep the dogs under control. He emphasised the need to bring the population of dogs under control through the collective efforts of the Administration, Hill Councils, PRIs and Army/Paramilitary forces.

Meanwhile, a delegation comprising the Executive Director, Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG), Eshey Tondup and President, Women Alliance of Ladakh, Tsering Chondol, also called on the LG at Raj Niwas and requested him to take stringent action against the accused involved in the rape and attempted murder of a minor girl in Ladakh.

They also requested the need to establish a Rehabilitation Centre in Ladakh and the need to improve the frequency of public transport on fixed routes in Leh, said an official spokesman.

The LG informed the delegates that stringent action would be taken against the accused. He also informed about instructions being issued to Ladakh Police to sensitise and raise awareness among parents of juveniles involved in violent conduct along with making the Observation Homes fully functional. He further informed that strict action will be taken against drug peddlers to deter them from indulging in such unlawful practices.

The LG informed the delegates about the instructions passed by him to the Transport Department to prepare a schedule and SOP to operate public transport on fixed routes on a regular basis.
