LEH: In a major step towards the mission of making the union territory a carbon-neutral region, the Ladakh administration on Tuesday launched the Energy Efficiency Measures in the region, with the aim to adopt green practices to reduce carbon emissions and control pollution.
Lieutenant Governor Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) was the chief guest at the launch event organised by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) in collaboration with the UT Administration and Hill Council, Leh, at Sindhu Sanskriti Kendra.
Commending the EESL’s initiatives for providing energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooking facilities, the LG said that the introduction of zero-emission energy-efficient solutions will prove beneficial for the environment and also the existence and good health of the people of Ladakh.
“The energy-efficient measures will further expedite the development process in Ladakh,” said the LG.
“Such initiatives are in line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji’s vision of making Ladakh the first carbon-neutral region in the country,” he said.
He emphasised the need to sustain our environment and the natural biodiversity so that we leave this earth in a better condition than what we had inherited from our ancestors when we depart from this earth for future generations.
“We need to take this effort ahead,” he added.
The LG highlighted Pashmina as ‘our traditional product’ and informed about the Administration’s plan to provide zero-emission pens to the nomads to reduce the mortality rate of the kids of pashmina goats, especially during the winter when pashmina goats give birth to kids.
The LG distributed inverter bulbs to around eight beneficiaries from different parts of Ladakh. These bulbs are 90% energy efficient and can provide an emergency backup of four hours.
Speaking at the event, CEC LAHDC Leh Tashi Gyalson stressed the importance of sustainable development and the need to adopt eco-friendly technologies.
He also emphasised the significance of reducing carbon emissions and preserving the environment for future generations. He stressed the importance of involving local vendors in the distribution of the inverter bulbs being provided by EESL to the local beneficiaries. He also emphasised the need for sensitizing individuals to the efficient usage of electric appliances in their daily lives.
In his Address, Member Parliament Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal JTN spoke about the government’s efforts to minimise carbon emissions and attain sustainable energy by efficiently using available resources. He emphasised the importance of preserving glaciers given climate change and thanked EESL for the initiative.
Earlier, Chief Executing Officer (CEO), EESL, Vishal Kapoor welcomed the guests and briefed about EESL’s efforts to make Ladakh a carbon-neutral region. He informed that EESL will also work closely with the local government to sensitise the public about the benefits and the need to adopt energy conservation practices and transition towards a sustainable future.
