LEH: Days after his name was cleared for the prestigious post, Professor Rajesh Ranjan on Saturday assumed charged as the new Vice Chancellor of Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS)- a Deemed to be University.

The union government on Tuesday had appointed Professor Rajesh Ranjan for the post of Vice Chancellor of CIBS, located in Choglamsar, Leh, Ladakh.

“Accordingly, Prof Rajesh Ranjan has joined his service at Ministry of Culture on 23rd March and assumed the charge of Vice Chancellor, CIBS, Leh on Saturday,” said an official spokesperson.

Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal also accompanied Prof Ranjan from Delhi.

Upon his arrival, a reception with great enthusiasm in his honour was arranged by the staff and students of CIBS, Leh.

Upon his arrival, Prof Rajesh Ranjan, participated in the Puja performed by the staff members of the Institute in front of PANCH VARGYA BHIKHU (Five Disciples of Buddha), said the spokesperson.

Stanzin Chosphel, Executive Councilor (Culture) and Revenue, Konchok Tsephel, Councilor for Sangha Community, LAHDC, Leh were also present on the ocassion.

The Central Institute of Buddhist Studies was formerly known as the School of Buddhist Philosophy, founded in 1959 and formerly affiliated to the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi.

In 2016, the Central Government, on the advice of the University Grants Committee (UGC), declared that the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, was ‘deemed to be university’ for the purpose of the UGC Act, 1956.
